Beginning in 1953 with the construction of Buford Dam by the U.S. Army Corps
of Engineers, Lake Sidney Lanier covers over 38,000 acres with 692 miles of
shoreline, over 7,000 homes with private docks, 10 marinas and 49 public parks.
Today, the Corps manages the lake for the purpose of recreation, electric power,
water and flood control.

Prices for lakefront homes with docks range from $250,000 to over
$5,000,000. Dockable lots begin at $125,000.

The shoreline has approximately 10,000 dock permits issued. The
Corps will not issue any more permits once the cap of 10,600 is
reached which is anticipated in 2007.

The Lake area is spread over four counties including
Hall, Forsyth, Dawson, and Gwinnett. Most homes
are in Hall and Forsyth. The towns are:
- (Dawson County) Dawsonville
- (Forsyth County) Cumming and Gainesville
- (Gwinnett County) Buford
- (Hall County) Buford, Flowery Branch, Gainesville, Murrayville, Oakwood
